The Million Pound Note This time I want to talk about a very famous short story written by Mark Twain---------“The Million Pound Note”. Referring to Mark Twain, you must feel familiar, because we must have read his works before. I still remember the article “ The Bite Events on the Train” in our textbook when I"m in the middle school. What touched me most at that time were his ironic words. Yes, he is a great humorist, novelist, writer and orator in America in nineteenth century. During his 40 years" writing career, he created dozens of short or long stories. This story tells about a poor but honest American Adam Hey. When he was wandering in the street of London, he was given by two billionaires a letter, in which he surprisedly found a £1,000,000 pound bank-note. Later he got to know that the two billionaires who were brothers had made a bet about the results after he got a one million-pound note at once. One of them thought the note wound count for nothing to the poor man because he could not prove that the money was his own while the other considered just as the opposite. Dramatically, the plot went just out of my expectation. Herry went to a restaurant to have dinner first. The manager was mean to him at the beginning but his attitude changed quickly when Herry took out the note and asked for change. Faced with a millionaire, the manager apologized again and again and obsequiously told Herry that he didn"t need to pay for the bill right now. So Herry managed to have a free dinner. Then similarly, Herry went to a clothing shop and got a suit of clothes costing him nothing. Like the plot above, people are curious of such a rich man and tried every means to cozy up to him, from free food, free clothes to free accommodation. At the same time, his social status was becoming higher and higher and finally higher than most dukes. Apart from that, he later got a beautiful wife and 200,000 pounds of bank interest. I can imagine a bright future was waiting for him. The writing style of this story is so humorous. Mark Twain used hyperbole describing how our hero defeated snobbishness repeatedly. What I appreciate most is the detailed description of different people"s ridiculous actions before one million pounds, vivid, funny, ironic and humorous, which forms a Caricature. In terms of the theme, it is apparent that the author wanted to denounce the overflowing mammonism in the society. Even now it gives us an impressive lesson. Yes, I cannot deny the importance of money to a person who wants to survive. We won"t live without money, with which we get food, clothes, house and many other necessities. But we must know that there are many things which can"t be bought with money such as love or friendship. So in my opinion, money may be important to us, but not the most important. We need to build up the correct sense of money. To sum up, this story is a really good work of Mark Twain. The lesson I"ve learnt from it makes me want to be an honest man sincerely and lets me not to worship money too much. I begin to regret not reading it earlier. Studying aboard Nowadays, there appears an undeniable fact that an increasing number of Chinese students choose to study aboard. This phenomenon has drawn considerable public attention. Undoubtedly, there are a great many advantages of studying overseas. First and foremost, living and studying aboard offers students a different perspective of the world. By communicating with their counterparts from various counties and areas international students can get access to different ideas and values which will surely broaden their vision and eich their experience. In addition, it provides Chinese students a precious opportunity to get insights into different cultures and improve their second-language skills. What"s more, overseas experience is likely to bring more job opportunities to Chinese students when they are hunting jobs at home. As far as I"m concerned, if possible, I will study aboard. In my view, despite its great expenses, studying aboard is rewarding. In 1903, American seaman Hey Adams (Gregory Peck) is stranded penniless in England and gets caught up in an unusual wager between two wealthy, eccentric brothers, Oliver (Ronald Squire) and Roderick Montpelier (Wilfrid Hyde-White). They persuade the Bank of England to issue a one million pound banknote, which they present to Adams in an envelope (only telling him that it contains some money). The reason for this is that Oliver believes that the mere existence of the note will enable the possessor to obtain whatever he needs, while Roderick contends that it would actually have to be spent for it to be of any use. Once Adams gets over the shock of discovering how much the note is worth, he tries to return it to the brothers, but is told that they have left for a month. He then finds a letter in the envelope, explaining the wager and promising him a job if he can avoid spending the note for the month. At first, everything goes as Oliver had predicted. Adams is mistaken for an eccentric millionaire and has no trouble getting food, clothes and a hotel suite on credit, just by showing his note. The story of the note is reported in the newspapers. Adams is welcomed into exclusive social circles, meeting the American ambassador and English aristocracy. He becomes very friendly with Portia Lansdowne (Jane Griffiths), the niece of the Duchess of Cromarty. Then, fellow American Lloyd Hastings (Hartley Power) asks him to back a business venture. Hastings tells Adams that he does not have to put up any money himself; the mere association will allow Hastings to raise the money he needs to start up a gold mine by selling shares. Trouble arises when the Duke of Frognal (A. E. Matthews), who had been unceremoniously evicted from the suite Adams now occupies, hides the note as a joke. When Adams is unable to produce the note, panic breaks out amongst the shareholders and Adams" creditors. Fortunately, all is straightened out in the end, and Adams is able to return the note to the Montpelier brothers at the end of the month.2023-07-08 23:10:351

First, this movie----- "millions of pounds" is a story of American Henry Adams, because of an accident he became penniless, be on the beach. But because of accidental opportunity, he got a cheque for£ 1000000 from a pair of millionaire brothers. When the hero got the check, the attitude of the people around him and his life has changed, people believe a man who has a value of 1 million check people like a God. And when people began to doubt whether the check real time, ladies and gentlemen who will have to draw the line with him, at last, a month is over, everything is attributed to calm. When vanity and power fades away, do not rest,Henry Adams got a true love which not for fame and money, that is so touching. Briefly, I"m shocked by the craze for money and worship, people in the movie can believe a stranger without being told, only because he has a value of millions of check. I Can"t help to ask, money really so important? My answer is negative, even though the importance of money can not be denied, but happiness, health, love, family is more important in my heart. I think we should not yield to money , fawn upon the rich and powerful persons, nor will the money as a universal and bound themselves, we should know how to choose, give and take, and their love of the people through their love life, even imple but happy, isn"t it? Finally, as the film, Henry put down everything, but he got the harvest of love, live a simple and happy life. My Impressions after Reading" The Million Pound Note”. We need to build up the correct sense of money. Another point I want to emphasize is honesty. From the plot, we can see that there were so many people the brothers could choose, so why just Herry? I think it was because he was honest. When he got the note, what he did wasnu2019t use it right now but return it to the brothers. Without a kind and honest heart, Herry couldnu2019t have been such a successful man. There are various of tempertation alluring us in our life, Only by keeping honesty and consciousness inside can we manage to resist them. To sum up, this story is a really good work of Mark Twain. The lesson Iu2019ve learnt from it makes me want to be an honest man sincerely and lets me not to worship money too much. I begin to regret not reading it earlier. 百万英镑英文观后感 “money is everything,” “money is omnipotent,” the idea of a satire, to expose the ugly face of capitalist society. “One million pounds” is about a poor, honest man, that is, the heroine of this story has received a pair of brothers, the letter sent to him inside one million pounds. The brothers had made a bet, gambling, if a poor, honest people who come knocking on the door received the one million pounds, he will be what kind of results? Brother that he would starve to death because he could not prove that the money was his own, will be subject to other people"s doubts, and even the banks do not let him save money. His younger brother that he would lead a very good, and therefore they have the brothers of one million pounds will be loaned to check the poorest people, and spent 30 days abroad. Did not expect that during this period of time, people have the rare fortune suddenly rich, has tried to cozy up to him, from the free food, buy clothes, free accommodation, like a beggar, like to please him, and continue to improve his social status until the exception of the highest outdoor Wang Duke on! Not only that, he also has been a good wife and 30,000 pounds of bank interest, and finally from two brothers got a very good job. Lived a very, very happy life. See here, I am so envious of the “lucky” the heroine, but at the same time I would like to: people reason to curry favor with him, not just because when people value money too it? Worship of money is shameful and should not be reaping more! Money is not omnipotent, the world than money, there are many more important things u201e
Based on Mark Twain"s novel, "The Millionaire Pound Note" takes an interesting satirical look at the hypocrisy stemming from class distinction in the 50s England. England is a country where class and wealth are given extreme significance, especially among the rich. The film shows the hypocrisy that existed among these people, how the rich are quick to change face when in an instant they find out that you"re a man of wealth and how within the next moment they revert back to their condescending selves when all wealth is lost. Interestingly, "The Millionaire" also briefly looks at how the English perceived Americans in that era. Rich Americans were welcomed as outsiders and the poor were quickly shunned away. The fact that he"s an outsider either makes him more appealing or the complete opposite. The story sticks to the main theme by emphasizing on the hypocrisy of the upper class society but at the same time it also creates a balance that prevents the movie from being a mockery of the British society. The movie drags at some point but the love story appears at the right time and there is plenty of comedy to keep one entertained. A charming Gregory Peck totally nails the part and the luminous Jane Griffiths is a treat. Reginald Beckwith, as Peck"s sidekick Rock is amusing. The ending is a little predictable but the director does an overall good job by rounding it up and presenting his points. My Impressions after Reading" The Million Pound Note”. Mark Twain"s short story of "one million pounds" is a very good work. The article on the "money is everything," "money is omnipotent," the idea of a satire, to expose the ugly face of capitalist society. "One million pounds" is about a poor, honest man, that is, the heroine of this story has received a pair of brothers, the letter sent to him inside one million pounds. See here, I am so envious of the "lucky" the heroine, but at the same time I would like to: people reason to curry favor with him, not just because when people value money too it? Worship of money is shameful and should not be reaping more! Money is not omnipotent, the world than money, there are many more important things.2023-07-08 23:13:081
How to read the poems to express the feeling of the poets?
常见的问题有: what/which…?who/whom/whose…?when/where/why/how…? 设置题目:listen to the first paragraph and complete the notes. name of radio programe: interviewer"s name: traveller"s name: place to be discussed: 要求学生边听边记笔记,训练学生语言输出及转化的实际能力。 如在module3 unit3 the million pound bank-note, workbook,listening task中,听完材料并理解后让学生欣赏电影《百万英镑》中与听力材料内容相关的片段,并讨论以下两个问题:would henry tell portia the truth? what would be the result? 2023-07-08 23:13:411

He came to England by working on the ship to mortgage his tickets. A pair of rich brothers bet on a one million - pound note to see if a man can live in London for a month on this bill. Henry was found by two brothers while wandering on the sidewalk. They gave him an envelope. It contains a million pound note issued by the bank. Henry accepted the envelope in a confusing way. Because he was in shabby clothes, no matter where he went, people treated him in a rude manner. When he took out the bill, the attitude of the people changed. They flattered him. As for the bill, they even allow him to have everything without paying the bill. After a period of time. Henry has become the focus of upper class society. Everyone was curious about him and wanted to know him. Soon after, he was in trouble. He was in debt, and then the waitress joked with him to hide the bill. As a result, the stock market plunged. People think he is a liar, the hotel was packed with people asking for their money. Fortunately, a month"s deadline is coming soon. Henry gave the bill back to the two brothers. After a big rise and fall, Henry is tired of the pursuit of money. He left with his beloved girl Portia。 The whole story tells us that anyone have a chance to succeed if we have faith in ourselves and stick to it,never give up! No matter how hard it will be,we should always face the fact and try our best to conquer the enermy, just like the actor in the film. Nothing can stop us from struggling on the road to success. The most important thing that we should remember is JUST DO IT! The story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India"s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show"s questions. Each chapter of Jamal"s increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show"s seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out. At the heart of its storytelling lies the question of how anyone comes to know the things they know about life and love. Written by Fox Searchlight Pictures Eighteen year old Jamal Malik is having an amazing answering streak on the Indian version of the television game show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. He"s only one correct question away from the big prize. However, some, including those associated with the game show, question how someone like Jamal, a self confessed non-genius who grew up in the slums of Mumbai, can be doing so well on the show when others who are brighter, more educated and wealthier than him have failed. Is Jamal cheating? Is it purely luck that they have asked him the questions to which he knows the answers? Seeing Jamal"s life journey to this point ultimately answers these questions. His life journey includes being orphaned at an early age; growing up with an older brother, Salim, who was both his guardian/protector and antagonist; and having a relationship since childhood with another orphaned child, a girl named Latika. His motivation for being on the show also may provide some answers to his success. Perhaps it was all just meant to be. Written by Huggo In Mumbai, the eighteen year-old orphan from the slums Jamal Malik is tortured by the policemen in a precinct accused of cheating a game show. Jamal, who has no education and works in a call center serving tea, is close to wining twenty million rupees in the show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? hosted by Prem Kumar, giving precise answers to the questions and raising suspicion of fraud. The police inspector shows the videotape and after each question, Jamal tells parts of his childhood with his brother Salim, his crush for Latika and their fight to survive on the streets to justify each correct answer, guided by his common sense and past experience, and prove his innocence. Chris Gardner tells 20/20 how he worked to move himself from a life of homelessness to a successful life as a businessman. Gardner is the head of his own brokerage firm and lives in a Chicago Townhouse——one of his three homes with a collection of tailored suits, designer shoes, and Miles Davis albums. His path to this extraordinary success took a series of extraordinary turns. Just 20 years ago, Gardner was homeless and living, on occasion, in a bathroom at a Bay Area Rapid Transit station in Oakland, Calif. Gardner was raised by his mother, a schoolteacher. He says he never knew his father while he was growing up. But his mother had a way of keeping him grounded when he dreamed of things like being a jazz trumpeter. “Mothers have a way of saying things,” Gardner said, “She explained to me, "Son, there"s only one Miles Davis and he got that job. So you have to do something else. But what that something else was, I did not know."” Gardner credits his uncles with providing the male influence he needed. Many of them were military veterans. So, straight out of high school, he enlisted in the Navy for four years. He says it gave him a sense of what was possible. A Red Ferrari and a Turning Point After the military, Gardner took a job as a medical supply salesman. Then, he says, he reached another turning point in his life. In a parking lot, he met a man driving a red Ferrari.“ He was looking for a parking space. And I said, "You can have mine. But I gotta ask you two questions." The two questions were: What do you do? And how do you do that? Turns out this guy was a stockbroker and he was making $80,000 a month.” Gardner began knocking on doors, applying for training programs at brokerages, even though it meant he would have to live on next to nothing while he learned. When he finally was accepted into a program, he left his job in medical sales. But his plans collapsed as suddenly as they had materialized. The man who offered him the training slot was fired, and Gardner had no job to go back to. Things got worse. He was hauled off to jail for $1,200 in parking violations that he couldn"t pay. His wife left him. Then she asked him to care for their young son without her. Despite his lack of resources, Gardner said, “I made up my mind as a young kid that when I had children, my children were gonna know who their father was.” Although a broker finally helped him enter a training program, Gardner wound up with no place to live. He was collecting a meager stipend as a brokerage trainee, and, like many working poor in America, he had a job but couldn"t make ends meet. The Kindness of Strangers When he could afford it, he stayed with his son, Chris Jr., in cheap motels. When they returned home at night, Gardner says, he received help from some unexpected sources. “The ladies of the evening were beginning their shift. And they would always see myself, this baby and the stroller. “ “So they started giving him $5 bills. Without their help, Gardner said, there would have been nights when he couldn"t have fed his son. The Rev. Cecil Williams, founder of Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco, remembers the first time he saw Gardner, who had gone to the church with his son to stand in a meal line. He said, ”I wondered, "What in the world is a man doing with a baby?"“ 于是,她们就掏出五块钱给他。 Even to Williams, it was an unusual sight. The Urban Institute estimates that children make up 25 percent of the nation"s homeless population, but most are living with a single mother, not the father. It Is a Green Thing With Williams" help and a room supplied by Glide Memorial when he needed it, Gardner not only made it through the brokerage training program, he passed his licensing exam on the first try. Gardner went to work making cold calls at the firm of Dean Witter. He says no one at the firm knew he was homeless. “I was the first one at work, I was the last one to leave. I"d be on the phone, 200 phone calls a day. That"s what they noticed,” he said. “Every time I picked up that phone, I was digging my way out of this hole.” Gardner moved on to Bear, Stearns. As he learned the business, he also learned that it came with some unpleasant baggage. Because African-American brokers were rare, one phone customer, assuming that Gardner was white, told racist jokes as he placed his orders. When the client came for a face-to-face meeting, Gardner says, “He was either gonna close his account with me or I was gonna get all his business.” Gardner kept the account.“That"s when I learned in this business it"s not a black thing, it"s not a white thing, it"s a green thing. If you can make me money, I don"t care what color you are.” In 1987, with $10,000 in capital, Gardner started his own company in Chicago, operating at first from his home. His company is now an institutional brokerage firm with offices in Chicago"s financial district. Ironically, when San Francisco"s Bay Area Rapid Transit System issued new bonds to raise money a few years ago, one of the underwriters was Gardner"s company run by a man who, when he was hom2023-07-08 23:13:481

Released in the US as Man With a Million, The Million Pound Note is a satisfying adaptation of a satirical short story by Mark Twain. Gregory Peck plays Henry Adams, an impecunious American living by his wits in London. Henry becomes the object of a wager between millionaire brothers Oliver and Roderick Montpelier (Ronald Squire and Wilfred Hyde-White), who want to find out if a man with a million pound note in his bank account could live comfortably for one month on the strength of that note--without ever spending a penny of it. When Henry is given the note and lets it be known that he has it, every courtesy imaginable is extended to him by hoteliers, restauranteurs, etc. Trouble brews when Henry uses the note"s reputation to speculate on the stock market. When his creditors demand that he produce the note as an act of faith, Henry is unable to do so, whereupon pandemonium reigns--and the audience"s laughter cascades.

It is the summer of 1903.Two old and wealthy brothers, Roderick and Oliver, have made a bet.Oliver believes that with a million pound bank note a man could survive a month in London. His brother Roderick doubts it.At this moment, they see a penniless young man wandering on the pavement outside their house. It is Henry Adams, an American businessman, who is lost in London and does not know what he should do. RODERICK: Young man, would you step inside a moment, please? I didn"t know whether I could survive until morning. The next morning I"d just about given myself up for lost when I was spotted by a ship. OLIVER: And it was the ship that brought you to England. HENRY: Yes. The fact is that I earned my passage by working as an unpaid hand, which accounts for my appearance.I went to the American embassy to seek help, but ...(The brothers smile at each other.) RODERICK: Well, you mustn"t worry about that. It"s an advantage. HENRY: I"m afraid I don"t quite follow you, sir. RODERICK: Tell us, Mr Adams, what sort of work did you do in America?奥利弗:亚当斯先生,请你告诉我们,你在美国干哪个行当?HENRY: I worked for a mining company.Could you offer me some kind of work here? If you don"t mind, may I ask you how much money you have?罗德里克:耐心点儿,亚当斯先生,如果你不介意,我能不能问问,你手头儿有多少钱?HENRY: Well, to be honest, I have none. OLIVER: (happily) What luck!
Here"s a English review of "The Million Pound Note":Mark Twain"s short story of "One Million Pounds" is a very good work. The film adaptation takes an interesting satirical look at the hypocrisy stemming from class distinction in 1950s England. The film successfully sticks to the main theme by emphasizing on the hypocrisy of the upper class society, while also creating a balance that prevents the movie from being a mockery of British society. The acting is superb, and the screenplay is very well done. The film is definitely worth watching if you want to see a good satirical film that also happens to be a love story. That"s my review of "The Million Pound Note". I hope you enjoyed it!2023-07-08 23:21:562
